Mikel Navarro

Mikel Navarro holds a PhD from the University of Deusto (1988) where he became professor of Economics in 1994. His career has been linked to this university where he has carried out different functions in management, teaching and research. In the management area, he was Vice Dean responsible for Research as well as Head of the Economics Department at the School of Economics and Business Administration (ESTE). He was also a member of the Doctoral Board of the University of Deusto for many years. He was responsible for the Microeconomics of Competitiveness course (MOC) both when it was run by the University of Deusto and when it moved to the Basque Institute of Competitiveness.


In the teaching area, he has been a faculty member in the undergraduate and graduate courses of the ESTE since 1986, in the field of the economic environment of companies as well as that of economic and industrial policies. He has lectured in the MOC course since its creation and more recently, when the Deusto Business School was created, he participated in their executive courses. In the research area he has specialized in competitiveness and innovation, fields in which he has directed more than twenty research projects with external funds. He has also published a dozen books and about fifty scientific articles or chapters of books in national and international publications, and participated in countless international conferences and workshops. He is currently a member of the editorial board of the economic journal Ekonomiaz. As an expert, he has participated in the discussion of many of the industrial and innovation policies set up in the Basque Country.


He participated actively in the creation of the Basque Institute of Competiveness, of which he was the first academic director. Currently, he is senior researcher in the Institute’s Area of Clusters, Regional Development and Innovation.
